Dear spiritual therapist who is scared to “go there…”

One of my talented clinicians who I was a client to years ago, advertised herself in a very clinically appropriate and buttoned up way. She was so clinically on-point and I was fearful to mess up the therapeutic dynamic by bringing up my spiritual contact experiences.

Then one day, my spirit guides whispered to me, “you can talk about that stuff.” I was hesitant at first, because being a clinically trained clinician myself, I know how spiritual chat can be taken by the wrong audience.

However, I trust my guides, and told my therapist, “So…it runs in my family to see spirits and such. Do you think I’m crazy?” She smiled and said, “I had to call the Board of behavioral sciences when just developing my website, sweetie. I had to make sure that I could advertise certain things because I know your fear. It’s ok. I get it. Let’s go there.” I took a huge sigh of relief, and we dove deeply.

It was so exciting, because some of my previous trauma was spiritual-related and I needed solution. I can’t tell you how many clinical colleagues I have spoken to over the years who would love to open up such conversations with their clients yet are absolutely terrified so they never give their clients the opportunity to expand sessions in such a way.

I think it’s so great whenever my spirit guides tell me certain clients need to talk about it, and I open that door. Some clients slam it shut and focus on whatever their initial treatment goals were (i.e. weight loss, grief, life transitions, etc), others peek inside the door and maybe step over the threshold while others dive right in head first and say, “it’s about damn time, Michelle!”

We all need a safe space to talk about “that stuff.” I’m never in a position to tell someone what does or doesn’t exist. Every client has a right to their own belief system. I’ve had plenty of clients say they don’t believe in ETs, spirits, etc. I just smile and say, “Hey man. Whatever floats your boat. Let’s get to those treatment goals and move you into awesome solution, yeah? Let’s get you those results.”

Of course, I don’t only work with clients who watch The Gaia Network. However, I absolutely welcome those of all belief systems and walks of life. We all need that safe person who is professional with boundaries and able to provide tools for further assistance. I feel it’s quite special to cultivate such a professional relationship. It’s necessary to honor all parts of yourself when doing the work.

I’ve had great therapists who didn’t understand the spirit realm, and while we did important work which I am eternally grateful for, I needed more. My heart needed more. My soul needed more.

My healing needed more room to stretch. I needed a practitioner who could spiritually explore with me. Thankfully, as time continued, I found amazing clinicians who provided just that. They inspired me greatly to hold space for other clients who, too, need that safety.

If you need to talk about “that stuff,” as well as other areas of focus, I’m accepting new clients again.

p.s. To the spiritual therapists…I dare you to go there. You’re no doubt intuitive. So I urge you to honor your intuition and open that door to the right clients. You’ll know who they are. xoxo
